McMinn HR

Ginny McMinn owns McMinn HR, our featured referral partner. Ginny has over 30 years of HR experience with a variety of businesses, and brings a realistic and understanding approach to Human Resources, employee and compliance issues. Ginny has helped us to hire the last two employees for Benefits by Design, starting with a detailed understanding of what our firm needed in an employee. The result was a seamless process, easy for us to follow, with great employees as a result!

A hint or two from Ginny:

1. It’s important to think about the skills, training and experience needed before you begin looking for new employees. Don’t snare the easiest referral and hope for the best. Determine up front what you need now and to build the future you want for your business. Think about the person who will best amplify your existing team. Then begin to systematically look for that person. Hold yourself to the wish list and a consistent process in order to get the best hiring results.

2. When an issue arises with an employee, step back and think about what has occurred. Is the issue a new one, or something that has been building for some time? Is this a single instance or a pattern of performance or behavior issues? Get an objective viewpoint about how to handle the situation for the most constructive result. Typically, a discussion with Ginny will take just a few minutes and bring clarity to the situation. She will leave you with “next steps” and a plan to resolve the issue.

Too Expensive to Cover Your Dependents?

Remember to look at individual insurance as an option for your dependents. Many of the carriers offer plans that have higher deductibles or limited co-pays that help to reduce costs. These plans can also work for you if insurance is not offered through your employer, or if you are self employed. There are also plans that are short-term major medical which are affordable and they are definitely better than not having insurance at all. Please call Chris Conran at our office for an individual quote, 480-831-7700 or

3rd Quarter Updates & News

Posted on: September 30th, 2010 by Kristine No Comments

This quarter has kept our team very busy with all the Healthcare Reform changes. A few of these regulations that are effective today include coverage for pre-existing conditions for children under 19, dependent coverage for children up to age 26 who currently do not have other group coverage, unlimited lifetime limits for all policy holders and emergency services treated as in network. I have been doing several presentations on the subject so if you want more information please call our office.

I am hoping that many of these changes will help create more consumer awareness. And also realize that we are here to support you and your employees with any questions or challenges that you have. There is a lot to keep up with and it will be important to see how we can bring the costs down with all the new benefit additions.

We also added a new staff member, Colleen McCombs, who will be assisting Ryan Hansen with Account Management. Please feel free to call her and have her help you with any service issues. Also, we are happy to announce we added another baby to the Benefits by Design family. Ryan Hansen delivered Carson James on September 11, 2010. Both Mother and baby are doing great and Ryan will be back at work in November.

Personally I wanted to share with you that I was nominated for the Athena Award this year. I was not selected as a finalist, but it really is a great honor to be part of such a great group of successful women. Here are some other activities I am keeping active with: Tempe Leadership, Tempe Chamber of Commerce Board, Athena Powerlink Board, Gabriel’s Angel’s Board, ASBA Board and recently the Phoenix NAWBO Board as President-Elect. I truly feel that volunteering is what helps us grow as a person through leadership and learning.
